Late strike gives Rimmy the points against Mill Hill

Mill Hill 1-2 RFC – 17/8/19 (a)

David Cook’s Rimington side opened their 2019/20 campaign with a tough away fixture against last season’s league champions Mill Hill, and they showed an excellent team spirit as they battled their way to an important opening day victory.

A block from Fowler prevented a dig from distance early in the game, as things opened up for Mill Hill in what was a good opening spell from them.

Rimmy responded well and a flowing move down the right saw Phelps overlap as Smith and James combined to work space. He took a touch and shot wide across the face of goal.

Rimmy had to defend deliveries into the area as Mill Hill pushed forward, but McCarthy and Fowler coped with everything that came their way through a tense spell.

On 35 minutes Mill Hill took advantage of a poorly guided header which allowed the forward to pick his spot in emphatic style as he rifled an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

Keeper Kershaw was brought into action when Mill Hill’s overlapping forward used his pace to get into the box. His shot on the run was fierce but the veteran stopper deflected it away from goal.

Kershaw pulled off another fine save when a teasing free kick skimmed off heads and appeared to be about to bulge the bottom corner until the big stopper somehow got down to palm it away.

Rimmy continued to look excellent going forward after the break but crosses from Bailey and Phelps were dealt with as Tootle lurked.

A diagonal pass from Dakin found substitute Wood in space, and he stepped inside before having a shot blocked.

On 61 minutes excellent individual work from Sam Langford saw him bear down on goal. He dropped his shoulder and rounded the outrushing keeper and finished with ease.

There was a moment of panic for Rimmy when a wicked inswinging corner bypassed everybody, Dakin again cleared the danger.

With 80 minutes gone James managed to get to the by-line before teeing the ball back for the onrushing Bagot who was unmarked, his crisp shot was pushed to safety after a worldy save by the home keeper.

In added time James ‘The Milkman’ Tootle kept his cool as he took the ball into his stride. He picked his spot in the top corner with a neat and accurate finish.

The whistle eventually blew with the Rimmy delighted to have earned a solid three points at the end of a very competitive game.
