A rampant Rimington side brought lashings of New Year’s cheer as they beat last season’s East Lancs Division Two League Champions Rishton United.

United were on the attack with just 60 seconds on the clock. A cut back corner found United’s unmarked striker. He wound his right boot up and let fly, Tom Fowler could do nothing as it ricocheted off his shin and looped over the stranded Graeme Kershaw

A block from Ryan McCarthy prevented a dig from distance, as things opened up for United in what was a good opening spell from them.

Rimmy struggled to get out of their own half, as wave after wave of attacks came from the visitors, and a string of corners followed.

The home side responded with a good spell of possession but they struggled to find a way through as United’s defence stood tall. Joel Phelps tried to take matters into his own hands with a shot from distance but it drifted wide.

Chris Bailey was a good outlet on the left flank and he combined with Tom Fowler to create another opening. His cross was a teaser but the defender got to it first to make the clearance.

Rimmy saw plenty of the ball through the next 10 minutes, without quite managing to find a way through, but that changed on 40 minutes when Will Tyrell split the defence with a driven high ball. James Tootle cushioned header put it on a plate for forward Joel Phelps as he slid in to register his sixteenth goal of the season.

Both sides were then presented with one-on-one opportunities within seconds of each other before the break as the game remained wide open.

HT 1-1

The positive second half response got the goal it deserved on 48 minutes when Alex Wood rode a challenge before clipping a deft cross into the area. Joel Phelps had matched the run stride for stride and powered in from close-range.

That goal gave Rimington added momentum and they took the lead on 50 minutes when Sam Langford went on a break on the left flank. His cut back picked out Matt Bagot, and he rattled the ball into the unguarded net.

The hosts continued to probe, with both wide men constantly asking for the ball, and the away side's struggle to keep possession and invited unwanted pressure.

With 60 minutes Will Tyrell showed excellent awareness to rob possession. He picked out the in-form Alex Wood, who had set off on a run. Wood could easily have shot himself, but he chose to clip it back for Matt Bagot who made no mistake with a well taken finish.

Trickery Rob Smith earned his side a free kick on the angle of the box, Sam Langford direct shot cannoned off the post.

Rimmy held their shape through the closing stages and loud cheers accompanied the full time whistle.

FT - Rimmy 4-1 Rishton

Manager David Cook - The most important thing was the result - but, more importantly, I thought the performance was outstanding.
